The Biggest Surfing Event in Wales 22nd - 25th April 2011

Organisers will look to run the event over the Saturday, Sunday, Monday but may utilise the bank holiday Friday should conditions dictate. The event which showcases Wales best surfing talent in a variety of disciplines and age categories is the biggest surfing event in Wales and thanks once again to Quiksilver, promises to be even better than last year.

Current Open Champion Adam Jenkins will be looking to defend his crown from a rejuvenated and fully fit Lloyd Cole who was unable to defend his title last year due to injury. The Swansea duo won’t find it easy though as they face an in form and on a hat-trick George Schofield, who recently took both Elusive Welsh Open and Tsunami Cup titles.
In the Women’s Beth Mason is also on hat-trick as she looks to fend off the challenge from local girl Jo Dennison and close friend Gwen Spurlock.
The Quiksilver Welsh Nationals have been blessed over the last few years with excellent conditions and good weather, organisers will be hoping the good luck remains unchanged and that Fresh West in Pembrokeshire serves up some great waves.
With the added bonus of a possible four days of competition available, organisers will be able to make to most of what ever mother nature provides. As always our champions skills and fitness will be tested to the max.

Literature, music, poetry and cultural capers will be taking place at the Laugharne Weekend 15th - 17th April 2011

Kate Quill of The Times recommends Laugharne for a great British weekend. She suggests you listen to a recording of Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood on route to appreciate fully the spirit of West Wales where Dylan Thomas lived and wrote.

Carmarthenshire inspired Thomas all his life and the town of Laugharne was where he wrote some of his best work.

Laugharne has no Dylan themed tea shops or cheap souvenir shops spoiling its fine Georgian streets. It is populated by cheerful people who greet you warmly like neighbours. Clearly tourism hasn’t made them cynical.

His ‘seashaken house built on a breakneck of rocks’ is now a museum dedicated to the life and work of Dylan Thomas. Visit The Boathouse alongside the beautiful ‘heron priested shores’ of the Taf Estuary. Enjoy the snug homely place, have a cup of tea and a piece of Bara Brith (fruit cake) and peep into Dylan’s shed, a charming untidy writing den, preserved just as he left it in 1953.

Laugharne has other attractions to offer beside Dylan Thomas. Take a stroll alongside the river, visit the castle, browse the handful of interesting shops, eat and drink to your hearts content.

Why not make it more than a weekend and explore the superb surrounding Carmarthenshire coast and countryside .

Once a new property has been taken on it must be photographed for advertising on the web and in the brochure. The interior and exterior must be recorded as well as the surrounding locality.

Photography is a weather reliant pursuit. Recently it was necessary for two members of the procurement team to spend two whole days achieving the quality property shots necessary. A third member of staff attempted and aborted four visits to the locality before achieving the necessary pictures of the local area on the fifth visit.

A total of seven visits finally resulted in the high quality material deemed essential for an honest and complete representation of the property.

Quality Cottages will always go that extra mile to maintain its high standards of service to all of its clients, owners and guests.

The Lost Garden of Pembrokeshire......

Penty Park Walled Garden in Walton East, Pembrokeshire is currently being restored by local business woman Lesley Lewis, proprietor of The Georges Restaurant in Haverfordwest.

After years of neglect Lesley plans to restore the once productive fruit and vegetable area of Penty Park Estate using a sympathetic approach to its history and ecology with sustainable and organic development.

After 4 years hard work the gardener's cottage has been restored using original materials where possible and the garden is beginning to produce food again including honey, strawberries, organic herbs and leaves for the Georges Restaurant. A large green house has been reinstated along with its original wiring system where soft fruit and salad crops will be nutured. Much of the area will retain its natural peace and beauty as parkland nurturing wildlife, birds and ancient shrubs and trees. Lesley hopes in the future to open the garden as part of the National Garden Scheme open gardens for charity.

It is important to gather as much information as possible to guide and inform the work as it progresses.

If you have any information, particularly photographs or records of the garden in the past Lesley would be happy to copy and return them. She would vey much appreciate contact from anyone who can add to her knowledge. Lesley is already familiar with the book by Cecilia Jenkin nee Philipps Lloyd, who grew up at Penty Park in the early part of the 20th C but information from local families or workers on the estste with memories of the garden would be very useful. You may even have skills that would assist in this important attempt to preserve Pembrokeshire's heritage.

From Copper Lodge near Welshpool and Newtown Kathy and Angelo nipped over the border to visit the fascinating Roman City of Wroxeter.
An innovative Channel 4 programme instigated the construction of a recreated Roman Town House on the site. A team of modern builders built the house using traditional Roman methods supervised by Professor Dai Morgan Evans (a good Welsh name) with a Roman building manual written 2000 years ago by engineer Vitruvius.
The result is this remarkable building now open to the public.

Welsh hero Owain Glyndwr

Owain Glyndwr was a Welsh ruler and the last native Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales. He led a long and unsuccessful uprising aginst Henry IV of England - the last war of independence. Owain was never captured or tempted by Royal pardons. He was last seen in 1412 his last years still a mystery.

In 2002 Owain Glyndwr was voted 23rd out of 100 Greatest Britons. Glyndwr Day 16th September is celebrated by the flying of Welsh flags.

The Owain Glyndwr Centre in Machynlleth tells of his campaigns and plans for the future of Wales. Visit the site of the National Assembley of Wales held by Owain Glyndwr in midsummer 1404 when he was crowned Prince of Wales.

Walk through National Trust woodland to Abermawr

'The Closing of the Circle'
My wife and I are English born and first came to live in North Pembrokeshire in the late 1950's. Having been away for a few years in the eighties, we have now returned to view the changes that have taken place and ponder the future for this region of Wales.

I am now writing with an ink pen on paper sitting at my desk in the small first floor study of our cottage home, some three miles inland from that remote, roaring storm beach of Abermawr in west Wales. Life here is a daily delight.

The desk at which I sit is a knee-hole design of dark oak and sits directly under the window and on a level with the sill. Whilst I am writing this, if I pause for thought, or more likely for inspiration and raise my head, I look over the village green, which in its turn slopes down and away to a vast and magnificently beautiful wetland marsh, a wild and enchanting waste of reeds and water where hunt marsh harrier and the sparrow hawk. Here also live the heron, the otter and the kingfisher, all in competition, one with the other, for the frogs, eels and wild brown trout which dart over the gravelled shallows of the infant river.

The area referred to near the source of the Western Cleddau is now a National Nature Reserve ' Corsydd Llangloffan' . Otters, water shrews, water voles, polecats and badgers all use the reserve.

The reserve lies about five-and-a-half kilometres southwest of Fishguard, just to the north of Castlemorris.

What a lovely surprise to come across exotic food tucked away in the heart of the pretty little Welsh village of Llechryd on the Teifi River. We went to walk along the delightful riverside path to Cilgerran Castle. The last thing on our minds was Thai food. We stumbled across the hand written sign on our way out of the village homeward bound. Next time I won't be packing the picnic basket, instead we will indulge in a Thai feast along the river. Has anyone tried Linda's Thai take away ?

I have holidayed on the island of Angelsey for over 20 years and all I can say it is one fantastic place.
A lovely place for families to enjoy, great coast views, interesting walks in the countryside.
Last year we had ten weeks at Ligwy I walked up Parys mountain 2 or 3 times and I am turned 77 years.
It is the only place to be, the island beaches are fantastic, water clean and if you talk to the locals there is so much to learn

The palace have confirmed that Kate Middleton will wear a wedding band made of Welsh gold from a nugget supplied by Cloggau Welsh Gold Company. Prince William who does not care for jewellery of any sort has chosen not to wear a wedding ring with the backing of his future wife.

This Welsh gold ring is inscribed with the word 'Cariad' Welsh for sweetheart.

We hope we have made it easier to view and buy our pots on line, as well as give you an idea of our ever changing gallery pieces.
We have added a new line at the Pottery. We spotted some beautiful Country style furniture made by a local maker and after meeting the guys at Country Wood crafts we asked if we could sell their furniture at Gwili pottery, which i'm pleased to say they agreed to, so now we have a beautiful range of wooden furniture to display our wonderful pots on.

Llangollen Wharf is one of the major attractions in the North Wales market town of Llangollen and is now part of a World Heritage Site. From the Wharf you can embark on either a horse drawn boat trip along the feeder for the main canal, or a motorised aqueduct cruise which takes you across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct built by Thomas Telford. Both these trips take in the magical sights and sounds of the beautiful Llangollen Canal. Longer horse drawn trips can be arranged for large groups. The Tenby Daffodil

The jury is still out on whether the Tenby Daffodil is naturalised or introduced. The only other true British native daffodil, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, also found mainly in south Wales is known as the Lent Lily because it flowers through February, March and sometimes early April therefore over the period of lent.

The little Tenby Daffodil, just 8"(20cm) tall, is so called because it is mostly found growing wild around the Tenby area. It can also be found in other areas of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion but is scarce.

A version of the Tenby Daffodil has been cultivated since medieval times and the Royal Horticultural Society have now given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of its outstanding excellence.

The origin of daffodils and leeks being used as national emblems of Wales is obscure but in Welsh the names for daffodil and leek are very similar. Daffodil - Cenhinen Pedr, Leek - Cenhinen so maybe it was just confusion.

Since the 6th C Welsh soldiers have worn a leek in their caps to distinguish themselves from their foes in battle. Welsh soldiers today still have cap badges and buttons with leeks on. It is believed that the English government encouraged the use of the daffodil as a national emblem because it has less nationalistic undertones associated with defeat of the saxons.

The daffodil certainly became more popular during the 19th C and particularly during the 20th C when the Prime minister of the time, Lloyd George, wore a daffodil on St Davids Day for the investiture of the then Prince of Wales.

Whatever its origins there are few flowers that herald the coming of spring in quite such a flamboyant, colourful and cheery way. When you visit Wales be sure to call in at a local garden centre and buy yourself a bag of Spring to take home with you.

Angelo & Kathy went from their holiday cottage Copper Lodge to Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding & Rehabilitation Centre in Rhayader, Powys. They were blown away by these incredible birds.
Red Kites have been visiting Gigrin Farm for many years. In 1993 the RSPB made a request for the farm to become an official feeding station. The visiting Red Kites have grown in numbers ever since from around a dozen to over 400 in the winter of 2005/6. They consume upwards of 1/4 tonne of meat (beef fit for human consumption) per week. Feeding takes place at 2pm in winter and 3pm in summer.
There are 5 hides as well as an elevated viewing area from which to see the birds so close binoculars are not necessary.

Following in the footsteps of Artist Graham Sutherland, Rolf Harris explored Lleithr a coastal farm with owner Mrs I James. He loved the environment, the animals, was wonderful with the children and painted the fig tree just as Sutherland did.
Sutherland often stayed with Mrs James’ family in order to paint the Pembrokeshire views he loved so much and as a sign of his appreciation was kind enough to give them one of his paintings.

Welsh Cake Recipe (A favourite of Mr Rees, Proprietor of Quality Cottages)

If you are unable to be in Wales you can still enjoy
a traditional Welsh treat on St David's Day

Ingredients
250g (8oz) SR flour
75g (3oz) butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
75g (3oz) currants
1 egg
a little milk to mix
extra caster sugar to sprinkle
1/4 teaspoon mixed (spice optional

Method
Rub fat into flour
Add dry ingredients
Add egg & milk
Mix to a stiff paste
Roll out, cut into rounds and cook on a bakestone (or a heavy based frying pan) over a medium heat until golden brown.
When cold sprinkle with sugar. Alternatively butter before eating.

Bakestones (in Welsh planc,maen,llechwen, gradell) are made of cast iron. Secondhand ones can sometimes be bought in Welsh antique shops or new ones in Welsh craft shops and country hardware stores.

Born in Australia to a Welsh father and Australian mother Shani eventually moved to the UK where she trained as an artist in Loughborough and London and has lived for many years in Llangadfan between Welshpool and Dolgellau, Wales Her paintings are powerful and emotional with imaginative and observational elements.
Rolf Harris with the aid of a hand mirror attempts to paint a self portrait in the same style as Shani whose own self portraits are influenced by her family history and childhood experiences.

On BBC Wales this week 23rd March Rolf Harris will be visiting the small mining town of Ystradgynlais on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. He will be exploring the adopted home and inspiration of Polish artist Josef Herman. Herman who lost his whole family during the holocaust fled Nazi occupied Warsaw and settled in the mining community of Ysradgynlais in 1944. He studied working people all of his life and particularly coal miners during his 11 years there. Rolf will attempt to paint in the style of Herman. Rolf's painting can be seen in the Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea.

A whale of a time in Wales

Fin whales are being spotted more and more frequently in Welsh waters leading experts to believe their migratory patterns might be changing. Welsh waters offer these majestic creatures good feeding and freedom from persecution typically during late autumn and winter although they have been spotted during the summer months too. They grow up to 80' long and 80 tons in weight blowing water spouts up to 30' when they surface to breathe and usually travel in pods of 2 - 7. Two were spotted from the bridge of the Stena ferry on route from Pembrokeshire to Ireland on 20th Jan 2011.
Regular ceacean surveys off the Pembrokeshire coast have also recorded sightings of fin, minke and humpback whales as well as orcas, rissos, dolphins and super pods of common dolphins.

St Teilos Church Llandeloy Pembrokeshire in the care of Friends of Friendless Churches

Charming St Teilos Church in Llandeloy north Pembrokeshire was built on a medieval site in 1926-27 using the Arts & Crafts principle of sourcing simple local materials without copying any particular style or period. The architect was John Coates Carter of Cardiff. The funding was provided by John Frances whose wealth came from copper smelting during that period. The church closed in 2002 and was taken over by The Friends of Friendless Churches. Cadw has designated the church as a Grade II listed building.

The beautiful interior has some lovely features including rood screen, wood carvings, two stone fonts, one of which was built from ancient stone found on the site, evocative paintwork, stained glass and more. When in the area St Teilos is well worth a visit.

National Vintage Tractor Run April 24th 2011 Pembrokeshire

The annual Easter Sunday National Tractor Run will, this year for the first time, be hosted in Pembrokeshire.

The festivities will kick off with a concert of local talent (bar and refreshments included) held at Withybush Show Ground on Saturday 23rd April.

The grand rally of possibly 400 vehicles or more will leave Withybush Show Ground at around 10 o'clock on Sunday morning. The procession will make its way along St Davids Road past the hospital and onto Pelcomb Cross turning left at Lambston. At Nolton Cross it will turn right towards Simpsons Cross then left on the main road to Nolton Haven. It will then take a country track leading to Roch which offers wonderful coastal views before turning left for Newgale. From Newgale the tractors will make their way up Newgale Hill turning at Pen y Cwm through Brawdy Farm, Treffgarne Owen, Tankerston Farm, Newton Cross and then stopping at
Walterstone Farm (approx 12.30 - 1.30) for a well deserved rest and some refreshments giving a splendid opportunity to view these remarkable old vehicles. The rally will then resume and pass through Welsh Hook, Wolfscastle, under the main road towards Spittle, past the Corner Piece Pub and Rudbaxton and back to Withybush Show Ground by about 4pm.

A. Wainwright famous for his love of the Lake District did not visit north Wales until he was 72. He feared the natural beauty would be sacrificed by huge quarries. Ty Glan Afon

This delightful traditional stone cottage stands on the same land from which Welsh gold was extracted for the Royal wedding rings. The owner of Ty Glan Afon owns and leases a portion of his land to the Clogau Mining Company. Click on the name for more details.

The Queen was presented with a supply of gold from the company’s Bontddu mine in 1986 but the recently engaged couple Prince William and Kate Middleton have been offered more if needed.

It is extremely rare and has a unique pink tinge as it is stained by the copper ore also found in the mine.

The Queen Mother’s wedding ring, the Queen’s in 1947, Princess Margaret’s in 1960, the Princess Royal’s in 1973 and that of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981 were all made from the same nugget from the mine.

The British Royal Family has been wearing Welsh gold wedding rings dating back to 1923 and the tradition has continued more recently with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales when he wed The Duchess of Cornwall back in 2005.

Craftsman's leaving present near Cadair Idris summit

A craftsman has created a chair, and taken it up a mountain, as a leaving gift to a Gwynedd community.

Nick Bullen said he had been given such a warm welcome when he set up in business in Corris six years ago that he wanted to give something back before returning to South Africa.

It took 15 people four hours to transport the reclaimed oak chair up Cadair Idris.

The chair now rests close to the 893m (2,930ft) summit.
The wood used is all reclaimed oak fence-posts and oak tree branches from the slopes of the mountain.
It is the type of wood Mr Bullen uses in his Sylviantutch eco-furniture business, which will carry on when he leaves.

We are heading back to South Africa on a semi-permanent basis, and the chair is an appropriate going away present," he said.

It weighs 200kg and is about 8ft and is made out of oak fence posts from the farm next door to the Cadair Idris summit," he added.

The chair should last about 20 years, but "if people are willing to go up there to give it some oil occasionally" it should survive the harsh Snowdonia weather for many years, he said.
A gift of a chair is also appropriated because the name of the mountain roughly translates as Idris' chair, he added.

Its always a pleasure to visit "Hen Bost" in the village of Llandrillo.It has to be said without exaggeration that this holiday cottage is truly exquisite.Having travelled around Wales photographing properties over the past few years,this one is at the top of my favorites list. I saw in the visitors book that guests here had been climbing Snowdon,visiting the Rhug farm shop down the road,eating at The Tyddyn Llan restaurant in the village and even ordering freshly made Thai take-away curries from the local shop. A hidden gem without doubt.Worth raving about!

Pennant Melangell

Today I stopped off at Pennant Melangell church near Llangynog in Carmarthenshire.Melangell was a female saint of the 7th century. According to tradition she came here from Ireland and lived as a hermit in the valley. One day Brochwel, Prince of Powys, was hunting and pursued a hare which took refuge under Melangell's cloak. The Prince's hounds fled, and he was moved by her courage and sanctity. He gave her the valley as a place of sanctuary and Melangell became Abbess of a small religious community. After her death her memory continued to be honoured and Pennant Melangell has since been a place of pilgrimage for many centuries. Melangell remains the patron saint of hares.
